The 1st Region 12 Climate Change Forum with the theme “Empowering Communities; for climate change mitigation and adaptation” was held last November 11, 2010 at the Family Country Hotel, General Santos City. The said activity was made possible through the collaboration with RD Foundation, Yamog Renewable Energy Development Group Inc. and the Mindanao Renewable Energy Network (MREN). Hon. Mayor Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio gave her keynote message and also Hon. Mariano U. Piamonte from the House of Representative of A TEACHER Partylist addressed his inspirational message. Speakers who shared their knowledge and expertise on climate change were from the DENR-EMB 12 - Datu Tungko Saikol on the Overview on Climate Change, DOE Mindanao – Engr. Antonio M. de Guzman on Renewable Energy Law (RA9531), Yamog - Engr. Nazario Cacayan on Community-based Renewable Energy Systems and Initiatives, Earth Rights Peoples Rights - Atty.Donna Gasgonia on Indigenous Peoples Rights ADSDMP as A Tool to address Climate Change and from the Communities for Global Environment Foundation - Angelina B. Cunanan on Engaging Donors for Community Projects to Adapt to Climate Change. The forum was a big success which was attended by 63 participants coming from the LGU’s, Academes, NGO’s and other groups who are advocates for environment from SOCSARGEN and other parts of Mindanao.
This activity was part of the long term plan of MREN, YAMOG and other partner organizations to raise the level of awareness among Mindanawons on climate change related issues affecting the global community & the need for community based adaptation initiatives to address climate change.
